Our history

More than a century of care in Dorchester County

The building on the Choptank River is gone, but the hospital's work, and the community support behind it, carries on in Cambridge.

    A hospital on the Choptank

The hospital is built on the Choptank River in Cambridge, known in its early years as the Cambridge-Maryland Hospital. For more than a century it serves Dorchester County families, with physicians and benefactors such as Dr. Brice Worthington Goldsborough, remembered as its founder.

  2. 1988

    The Foundation is formed

Community members establish the Dorchester General Hospital Foundation to raise money for the hospital's equipment, programs and staff, and to help local students and nurses build careers in health care.

  3. 1996

    Shore Health System

Dorchester General Hospital and The Memorial Hospital at Easton join to form Shore Health System, which later affiliates with the University of Maryland Medical System and is known today as UM Shore Regional Health.

  4. 2021

    A new medical campus

On October 28, 2021, UM Shore Regional Health at Cambridge opens at Cambridge Marketplace: a $53 million freestanding medical facility that brings emergency, surgical, diagnostic and specialty care together under one roof.

  5. 2022

Saying goodbye to the old building

The original hospital on the waterfront is demolished to make way for the Cambridge Harbor redevelopment. Its portraits, plaques and black walnut chapel pews, made by local craftspeople, are now in the care of the Dorchester County Historical Society.

The new freestanding medical facility gives Dorchester County a broad range of vital services, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary still runs its gift shop, and the Foundation continues to support its programs and the people who work there.
